Keep in touch with injured employees.
Even if your injured employees are away from the workplace, keep in touch as they recover. This has a huge impact on an employee’s psychological recovery, and also helps you stay up to date on their progress. Maintaining these connections will also make the transition back to work a lot easier.
Make a plan for returning to work.
As return to work dates grow closer, make a transition plan. Will you need to make accommodations? Coordinating with physicians and employees will help make the transition a smooth one. Be sure to let the physician know about your company’s light duty options. Remember, once the doctor releases injured employees back to full work duty, they are no longer eligible for workers compensation benefits.
Consider transitional duty.
Early in the process, we encourage you to start talking with your employees about the plan to come back to work. This might include transitional duty, or “light duty,” which allows the employee to come back to work with modified job duties. This helps them maintain their routine, be productive and recover faster — and it helps you control claims costs.
